Reports: Khabibulin faces new charge [smilie=5160.gif]

Edmonton Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin is facing an additional charge of extreme drunken driving in Arizona stemming from his arrest earlier this month, according to multiple media reports.

In Arizona, an additional charge of extreme drunken driving can be brought when a motorist's blood alcohol level exceeds 0.15 percent. The charge is a misdemeanor with a maximum jail sentence of six months.

Khabibulin's is already facing charges of drunken driving and excessive speeding in connection with the arrest.

Scottsdale police say an officer pulled over Khabibulin's Ferrari shortly after midnight on Feb. 8 after the car was clocked at 70 mph in a 45 mph zone. Police say an officer smelled alcohol on Khabibulin and he was arrested after a field sobriety test.

The 37-year-old Khabibulin played for the Phoenix Coyotes from 1996-99 and still has a home in Paradise Valley. He hasn't played since Nov. 16 because of a herniated disk in his back that required surgery last month.

Khabibulin has a 7-2-9 record with a 3.03 goals-against average this season, his first with the Oilers after signing a four-year, $15 million contract last summer. The four-time NHL All-Star has also played for Winnipeg, Chicago and Tampa Bay and helped the Lightning win the Stanley Cup in 2004.

Unfortunately I have to report one of my favorite players..............

A police report shows Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown had a blood alcohol level that was nearly twice the legal limit when he was arrested on a DUI charge in suburban Atlanta over the weekend.

The report, obtained by The Associated Press through an open records request, says Brown failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol level of .158 when given a breath test. The limit to legally drive in Georgia is 0.08.

The report says a Marietta police officer pulled Brown over at 4:29 a.m. Saturday after seeing the 28-year-old driving fast and drifting into other lanes.

Brown did not immediately return a message seeking comment Thursday on his home phone. A man who answered the phone at Brown's mother's house said Brown and his mother were in Maryland.
What do you expect? The comedian is dead.

Porter suspected of drunken driving

www.ESPN.com

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Authorities say NFL linebacker Joey Porter has been arrested in Bakersfield on suspicion of drunken driving and accused of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.

The California Highway Patrol said Porter was confronted by officers early Saturday in a fast-food parking lot.

Porter, 33, refused to provide his driver's license and began to roll up his window when asked to leave the car. Police say that when an officer reached to unlock the door Porter slapped the officer's hand.

Porter eventually got out and complied with orders, placing his hands behind his back. He and a passenger were arrested.

The 11-year veteran recently signed signed a three-year, $17.5 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals. He also has played for Pittsburgh and Miami.

The Cardinals released a statement Saturday: "The team is aware of the incident. We are in the process of gathering all of the facts concerning it and won't comment further until that's completed."
What do you expect? The comedian is dead.

Mixed martial arts fighter arrested on suspicion of DUI following crash

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Oahu-based mixed martial arts fighter is scheduled to appear before a judge next month after he crashed his truck on the H1 Freeway while allegedly driving under the influence.

Officers arrested Christian Leben, 30, a middleweight fighter known as the Crippler, on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant Tuesday. He was released from custody after posting $1,000 bail.

Police say Leben was driving on the west-bound side of the H1 Freeway just before 2 AM, when he lost control of his pickup and crashed into a wall near the Kapiolani Boulevard off ramp. He was allegedly driving without a license and without insurance.

Coco Crisp arrested for DUI offense

PHOENIX -- Major league security officials met with the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday and delivered their annual spring lecture to the players on the pitfalls of their profession. One of the subjects discussed was the danger of drinking and driving.

Coco Crisp attended the meeting. Hours earlier he was in jail.

Crisp was arrested early Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz., on suspicion of drunk driving, the third major league player to be charged with DUI during spring training.

The A's released a statement on the matter.

"Coco Crisp was arrested and detained early this morning under the suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol," the club said. "He was released from the City of Scottsdale Jail this morning and arrived at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on time for team pre-game drills.

"The A's are aware of the situation and take such matters seriously. The team and Coco will have no further comment until further details are available."

Scottsdale police didn't immediately respond to calls Wednesday requesting information on the arrest.

Crisp was on the field for the morning workout, and he was in the clubhouse before the A's hosted the Cleveland Indians in an exhibition. Crisp did not speak with reporters before leaving Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Following the game, manager Bob Geren offered little information on Crisp's situation.

"I talked to Coco," he said. "The club put out a statement which speaks for all of us at this point."

Geren said Crisp will play on Thursday when the A's play a road game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The team has not indicated if Crisp faces any team discipline.

The 31-year-old Crisp is the latest major leaguer to face a DUI charge since training camps opened.

Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera was arrested in Florida on Feb. 16 on suspicion of driving under the influence and resisting an officer without violence. He is to be arraigned on March 16.

On Tuesday, the Indians learned that outfielder Austin Kearns was arrested on Feb. 12 in Kentucky. He chose not to tell the team on advice of his attorneys, and the team was put in the awkward position of addressing his situation without knowing many facts.

Crisp is coming off an injury-riddled 2010, when he played in just 75 games. He was on the disabled list in April with a broken pinkie finger and went on the DL again in May with a strained rib muscle. Crisp broke the pinkie a second time on Sept. 18 and missed the remainder of the season.

He batted .279 with eight homers, 38 RBIs and had 32 steals.

In November, the A's exercised their $5.75 million option on Crisp for 2011. He's eligible for free agency after this season.

Sam Hurd indicted on two counts

http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/ ... ng-charges

A federal grand jury in Dallas indicted former Chicago Bears receiver Sam Hurd and alleged co-conspirator Toby Lujan on Wednesday, each with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, and one count of possession with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, U.S. attorney Sarah R. Saldana of the Northern District of Texas announced.

Agents in Chicago with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations arrested Hurd at a Rosemont, Ill., steakhouse in December, and the receiver was cut by the Bears two days later.

If convicted on the conspiracy count, Hurd and Lujan face a statutory sentence of not less than 10 years and up to life in prison and a $10 million fine. The possession with intent to distribute count carries, upon conviction, a sentence of not less than five years and up to 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine.

An arrest warrant was issued Wednesday for Lujan, 26, of Dallas. No court date has been set.

Hurd's attorney, David Kenner of Encino, Calif., declined to comment on the indictment until he could review the documents.

The criminal complaint against Hurd describes him as regularly dealing large amounts of drugs in Chicago. Hurd allegedly attempted to purchase cocaine and marijuana from a supplier in North Texas, where the case was adjudicated.

The investigation into Hurd's attempt to buy large amounts of cocaine and marijuana began in July 2011, when the receiver was still playing for the Dallas Cowboys, and concluded when he personally met with an undercover agent in December at Morton's The Steakhouse in Rosemont.

At the meeting, Hurd told the agent he wanted to buy "five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week for distribution in the Chicago area," according to the criminal complaint.

Hurd allegedly negotiated to pay $25,000 per kilogram for the cocaine and $450 per pound for the marijuana. The complaint says that Hurd "further stated that he and another co-conspirator currently distribute four kilograms of cocaine per week in the Chicago area, but that the supplier could not supply him with enough quantity."

After they agreed on a price, the undercover agent gave Hurd a kilogram of cocaine, according to the complaint. Hurd told the agent that he plays for the Bears and would get out of practice at 5:30 p.m., at which time he would make arrangements to pay for the drugs.

According to the complaint, Hurd then took the drugs and got in his car. He was promptly arrested.

Hurd hit authorities' radar in July, when a confidential informant told police that a man -- later identified as Lujan -- was attempting to obtain four kilograms of cocaine for an unknown buyer in the Dallas area. That man was later stopped by police with $88,000 in a canvas bag. He said that the car and the money belonged to Hurd. Police confiscated the money, and Hurd later contacted authorities trying to get the money back.

Hurd was interviewed by police and admitted that he owned the car and had taken the money out of the bank, but according to the complaint "the bank statement that Hurd provided ... did not accurately reflect the transactions and amounts claimed by Hurd."

Then in August, text messages and cellular phone records from a number used by Hurd showed up in relation to four individuals who were detained in California with currency, narcotics and weapons. The complaint states that the text message content "appeared to be consistent with narcotics trafficking and possible money laundering."

That same month, Lujan negotiated with the informant to purchase cocaine on Hurd's behalf, according to the complaint. In September, Lujan phoned the informant and told him his associates from Chicago were in Dallas and interested in buying five kilograms of cocaine.

Lujan said the buyer -- Hurd -- wanted to meet with the informant, but later advised that the receiver was unavailable because of obligations to the Bears. Lujan, according to the complaint, explained that Hurd's cousins were available to complete the transaction, and agreed to email the informant a photo of the money.

The complaint states the photo was never received.

In December, Hurd spoke with the informant again by phone and set up the meeting that eventually resulted in his arrest in the parking lot of the steakhouse with a kilogram of cocaine in his possession.

The indictment also includes a forfeiture allegation which would require the defendants -- if convicted -- to "forfeit to the United States all property real or personal, constituting, or derived from, the proceeds obtained, directly or indirectly, as a result of the respective offense; and any property, real or personal, used or intended to be used, in any manner or part, to commit or to facilitate the commission of the respective offense."

The property described includes, but isn't limited to, the $88,000 seized in the traffic stop and a 2010 Cadillac Escalade seized from Hurd on Dec. 14.

49ers' Aldon Smith charged with DUI

MIAMI -- San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has been charged with driving under the influence in Miami Beach.

Miami-Dade County jail records show Smith was booked Saturday morning and held on $1,000 bond. Jail records did not show whether Smith was represented by an attorney.

A Miami-Dade County Corrections spokeswoman said Smith was arrested by Miami Beach police. A police spokesman said he had no information immediately available about the arrest.

Smith was drafted as the seventh overall draft pick in 2011. During his first season, he had 14 sacks, a franchise record for a rookie linebacker. He also ranked 1st in the NFL in sacks among rookies.

The 49ers did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
