Decent event but the crowd was sparse.

Here are the results:

King Of Champions "Night Of Champions"
Written by J.R. Gordon

June 27, 2009 the KOC had fights live on the Internet at GoFightLive.tv and in person at the Crowne Plaza Event Center in Denver Colorado. The MMA fans were treated to an eleven bout card that had three titles on the line, and three professional bouts. In attendance at the event and cornering their fighters were team quest trainer Heath Simms, Team Quest fighter and current KOC champion Jesse Taylor and Tapout training center fighter Kevin Randleman.

In the main event Colorado fighter Nick Honstein faced off against WEC veteran Danny Martinez for the KOC 135 lb. professional MMA title. Round one saw each fighter striking well with Honstein flashing several head kicks at Martinez. On the ground Honstein was a flurry of nonstop activity with submission attempts from all positions while Martinez scored with some of his well known GNP. Round two had the fight hitting the canvas early and Martinez was able to control top position. Honstein again flurried with submission and escape attempts but the GNP of Martinez eventually took its toll. Honstein slowed, Martinez kept up the striking flurry and at 2:06 of round two the referee stopped the bout giving the title winning TKO win to Danny Martinez.

In the light heavyweight professional division Eric Smith faced Spencer Hooker. Smith landed solid punches early that Hooker answered, but on the mat Smith took top position and worked solid GNP while Hooker looked to escape. In round two the fight went between standing and ground work several times with Smith landing solid shots from all areas while Hooker tried to set up submissions when on the mat. The bout went to the judges and they saw it as an unanimous decision for Eric Smith.

Also in the professional division Joe Kelso faced off against Corey Grant. Round one saw Grant with multiple takedowns, but Kelso was always to get back to standing and he landed solid strikes from there. Round two Had Grant continuing to score with multiple takedowns and he spent the majority of the round working his GNP attack as Kelso stayed active trying to escape. When asked to score the bout the judges saw it as an unanimous decision in favor of Corey Grant.

Chris Saucedo fought Chris Holland for the KOC 170 lb. elimination MMA title. Holland kept the fight on the ground for the majority of round one and he worked his GNP attack with Saucedo flurrying well to end the round. Round two saw Holland open with a left hook that dropped Saucedo. Holland jumped on top and worked GNP until he scored the TKO and title winning stoppage at :32 of round two.

The rest of the bouts were elimination bouts.

Bout one: Eric Fuller Vs Julian Gonzales. Round one had good toe-to-toe striking to end the round with each staying active on the ground and Fuller attempting a triangle choke. Round two saw Gonzales dropping Fuller with an early flurry and the rest of the round was contested on the canvas with each scoring sweeps, escapes, submission attempts and GNP. Round three again saw Fuller dropped with a flurry from Gonzales. This time Gonzales finished with a strong GNP flurry to get the TKO win at :23 of round three.

Bout two: Mike Palo Vs Bobby Cassada. Palo got a takedown, took mount and worked between submission attempts and GNP but Cassada scrambled to standing. Palo got another takedown , took mount, secured back control and set in the fight winning RNC at 1:36 of round one.

Bout three: Tambora Gerl Vs James Valimont. Gerl landed early punches that dropped Valimont and on the mat he worked GNP from back control. Valimont tried for a back door escape but Gerl transitioned to a triangle choke and he got it closed off for the submission victory at 1:17 of round one.

Bout four: Joe Salley Vs Mike Rutherford for the KOC 135 lb. elimination title. Rutherford used aggressive striking to set up a takedown. On the mat he worked GNP while Salley was active with up kicks and submission attempts. The combatants scrambled to standing and Salley landed a flurry of knees before Rutherford got the takedown. On the way to the mat Rutherford had set in a guillotine and he closed it off for the tapout title win at 1:13 of round one.

Bout five: Nick Albert Vs Ian Chavez. Chavez scored an early takedown off of the clinch, but both fighters quickly scrambled back to standing. The fight went to the mat again and this time off of the scramble Chavez took mount, then secured back control. From there he worked GNP to get the TKO win at 1:38 of round one.

Bout six: William Jackson Vs Travis Andrews. Andrews got a takedown and from half mount he worked to set in a choke, but Jackson defended and the referee stood the fighters when the action slowed. There was a small flurry by each to end the round. Round two saw a strong exchange of strikes with Andrews initiating a takedown, but Jackson rolled into mount and worked GNP to get the TKO win at 1:26 of round two.

Bout seven: James Soiland Vs Gabe Contreras. Both fighters came out looking to strike and when on the mat Soiland worked his GNP. The fighters worked back to standing before Soiland pulled guard looking to close off a guillotine choke that Contrares defended until the round ended. Round two saw Contreras score several takedowns with Soiland working between scrambling and using rubber guard. Round three saw Contrares again looking for takedowns but it was Soiland that landed in side control. He secured the position and spent the majority of the round working his GNP attack. The judges had to make the call and they saw Soiland as the winner by unanimous decision.
