U.S.A. OLYMPIAN KEN CHERTOW TO CONDUCT 20TH ANNUAL GOLD MEDAL SUMMER TRAINING CAMPS

STATE COLLEGE, Pa., - Ken Chertow Wrestling, the nation’s largest amateur wrestling
camp system, will begin their 20th season of conducting Gold Medal summer wrestling
camps on May 24th in Kearney Nebraska. The Chertow Camp Tour will travel the nation
this summer from May 24 to August 15 visiting over 20 states from Pennsylvania to
California to New York and more.

The camp is owned and coached by Ken Chertow, a 3-time NCAA All-American at Penn
State University and United States Olympian. Chertow, who has been teaching and
coaching wrestling for more than 20 years, including coaching stints at both Penn
State and Ohio State Universities, has seen his campers succeed at the state,
national and world level. Chertow left college coaching to follow his passion of
training the next generation of wrestlers while providing each camper with the
skills to succeed on and off the mat. Chertow’s focus is helping kids grow into
successful student-athletes with a passion for wrestling and personal achievement.
There is a strong emphasis placed on academic success and making wise choices in all
aspects of life. Chertow recently remarked during an interview: "By teaching kids to
work hard and always do their best I know they can excel in life. Wrestling is a way
for kids to learn so many values and skills and I am honored to be a part of that
process"

SA Wrestlers Train With The Best Of The Best

Thirteen students from San Antonio Wrestling Club trained with U.S. Olympian Ken Chertow’s wrestling camp in Dallas, June 6-1, and practiced wrestling under the instruction of Eric Guerrero, three-time NCAA champion; Shane Barnes, 2003 NCAA champion and three-time NCAA All-American; and Roger Frizzell, four-time NCAA All-American.

Ken Chertow also worked with the students on mats that completely filled the ballroom of the Sterling Hotel. In addition to his Olympic career, Chertow was a three-time NCAA All-American and two-time Junior National and Junior World Champion in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.Tom Bierly, San Antonio Wrestling Club’s head coach, took the students to Dallas because of the quality of training. “I trained under Ken Chertow when I was growing up and believe he is the best for training young wrestlers at any skill level.”

His students include some champions, and four of them attended the training camp. Aaron Walker is the 125-pound Texas state Greco-Roman and freestyle champion. Nick Mabry placed second in the state in Greco-Roman. Jake Brogden and Elias Gonzalez are both former Texas state folkstyle champions. Bierly represented Team Virginia in the Cadet and Junior Nationals tournament while in high school, also winning the Virginia state championship in Greco-Roman, while runner-up in freestyle.

He was recruited to wrestle for the Air Force Academy, wrestling two years in college, and now serves in the Air Force, based in San Antonio.About one-fourth of the more than 100 students at the camp were from lower grades, first through eighth. San Antonio Wrestling Club trains students from age six to eighteen.

Chertow mentioned the need for wrestling programs for younger students. “Right now, the only experience for students before high school in much of Texas is camps like this and wrestling clubs,” said Chertow. “Most other sports don’t wait until ninth grade to start a program.

Wrestling has advantages for kids: it develops strength, coordination, agility and confidence. When we start seeing middle school programs in Texas, the level of competition will improve in a big way.

Four-time All-American Roger Frizzell began the training with a series of counters to single-leg and double-leg attacks. Frizzell, who is now the vice president of American Airlines, has been contributing his expertise to Chertow’s camps for a year.

“Ken is the best detail teacher anywhere,” Frizzell said. “No wrestler gets left behind at his camps, and all the kids get individual instruction on the mat.”
