THE OCTAGON RETURNS TO SWEDEN ON APRIL 6 WITH GUSTAFSSON BATTLING MOUSASI
The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the world's premier organization for mixed martial arts, announced today that it is planning its return to the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday, April 6. UFC’s first visit in Scandinavia was a tremendous success, selling out in less than three hours and breaking the Ericsson Globe Arena attendance records for sporting events.
Surging UFC light heavyweight star Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson will headline this event in his native Sweden for the second consecutive year, taking on red-hot former STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi of The Netherlands. The five-round main event will pit two of the sport’s best young strikers against one another with the winner moving closer to a date with the UFC light heavyweight champion.
Gustafsson recently defeated former UFC champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in his last bout. Before his collision with Shogun, the 26-year-old defeated Thiago Silva in front of a record crowd at the Ericsson Globe Arena last April.
Meanwhile, Mousasi, 28, is riding back-to-back victories, including a submission win over Mike Kyle earlier this month.
“Sweden is an incredible market for the UFC and we’re excited to once again bring a major UFC card to the Ericsson Globe Arena,” Garry Cook, UFC Executive Vice President and Managing Director EMEA, said. “Alexander Gustafsson is a big star in Sweden and has quickly grown in popularity worldwide thanks to his success in the Octagon. We know the fans in Sweden will make the Ericsson Globe Arena an absolutely electric atmosphere as he takes on the very talented Gegard Mousasi on April 6.”

UFC Stockholm: Gustafsson vs. Mousasi Tickets On Sale Feb. 9
The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday, April 6 for UFC STOCKHOLM 2013: GUSTAFSSON vs. MOUSASI. Rising Swedish light heavyweight Alexander "The Mauler" Gustafsson will headline the five-round main event, taking on former STRIKEFORCE light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi, of the Netherlands, on FUEL TV.
This will mark the UFC's second trip to Sweden. History was made last April during UFC® Sweden, also headlined by Gustafsson, selling out in less than three hours and breaking Ericsson Globe Arena's attendance record for sporting events.
Gustafsson (15-1) has only been defeated once in his 16-fight career. Currently on a six-fight win streak, Gustafsson recently triumphed over the accomplished Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Thiago Silva. Mousasi (33-3-2) also unbeaten in his last six fights, holds notable wins over Hector Lombard and has been one of the most dominant light heavyweights outside the UFC. On April 6, two of the sport's best strikers will square off in a match-up with title implications on the division.
The highly anticipated event will also feature Sweden native Akira Corassani taking on 145-pound prospect Robbie Peralta. Corassani (10-3, 1 NC) a veteran of The Ultimate Fighter® , made his long-awaited UFC debut with a split decision victory over Andy Ogle last September and has finished four of 10 victories. Peralta (16-3, 1 NC) is on a 10-fight unbeaten streak and coming off a 24-second knockout of Jason Young.
A welterweight must-win battle will also take place between Swedish up-and-comers Papy Abedi (8-2) and Besam Yousef (6-1), both of whom are looking for their first Octagon victory this April.

UFC on Fuel TV 9 Update: Alexander Gustafsson Cut Spells Demise of Main Event
Initial reports by Sweden’s SVT Sport and MMA news site MMANYTT.se said that a cut over Alexander Gustafsson’s eye put Saturday’s UFC on Fuel TV 9 match-up with Gegard Mousasi in jeopardy.
A follow-up report by MMANYTT.se, however, has all but assured that the fight will not happen.
Swedish MMA Federation president Gorge Sallfeldt told MMANYTT.se that three doctors, one in person and two examining photos, have determined that the cut Gustafsson suffered in one of his final sparring sessions will take weeks to heal.
Sallfeldt added that, even if the cut were to heal by Friday, letting someone go into a fight “with heavy scar tissue would not be an option.”
“It is very difficult to see that this will be medically approved on Friday,” said Sallfeldt, adding that Gustafsson wanted to go ahead with the fight, but “this is a medical decision and not up to Alexander himself.”
The bigger question now is how does the UFC handle the situation?
Gustafsson is the hometown hero in Stockholm, where the fight was to have taken place, and the UFC on Fuel TV 9 fight card itself is lacking in other bouts that are generally considered headline worthy.
With less than a week to go until fight time, it could also prove difficult to find a replacement fighter that is prepared and has the necessary documents in place to travel to Sweden and keep Mousasi on the card.
UFC officials had still not commented on the situation at the time of the latest updates from the Swedish MMA Federation.
