UFC on FOX Sports 1: Shogun vs Sonnen - Fight Card Updates

The UFC will make its long-awaited return to Boston August 17, as part of the launch of FOX Sports 1. The card for the FS 1 debut has begun to take shape, as two exciting bouts have been announced. Massachusetts native Joe Lauzon will take on hard-hitting Michael Johnson in a battle of TUF veterans. Both men, known for their fan-friendly styles, will be looking to get back in the win column and move up the lightweight ranks. In welterweight action, former top contender Thiago Alves will return from a lengthy injury layoff to face the streaking Matt Brown. After winning five straight (with four wins coming by KO/TKO), Brown will look to jump into the division's top ten with a victory over "The Pitbull".

FOX Sports 1 is delivering on its promise to launch in a big way with the addition of a major heavyweight bout to its fight card. Tenth-ranked Travis "Hapa" Browne will welcome Alistair Overeem (ranked fifth) back from injury on August 17.

FOX Sports 1 will launch on August 17 with a major main event, as former light heavyweight champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua will fight recent title challenger Chael Sonnen in a five-round headliner. Also announced for FOX Sports 1 three-hour main card is a bantamweight barnburner between one of the division's all-time greats, Urijah Faber, faces dangerous contender Yuri Alcantara. The 135-pounders will be showcased in a second high-profile bout in Boston as #3-ranked Michael McDonald faces #5-ranked Brad Pickett. Farther up on the scale, light heavyweights Ovince Saint Preux (winner of 10 of his last 11) and 8-2 Cody Donovan will both be looking for their second win inside the Octagon. TUF alumni James Vick and Ramsey Nijem have been added to the card in a lightweight scrap.

Former UFC and PRIDE champion Maurico “Shogun” Rua (21-7, fighting out of Curitiba, Brazil) will meet controversial and charismatic light heavyweight contender Chael Sonnen (28-13-1, fighting out of West Linn, Ore.) on Saturday, August 17 at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. The main event highlights an action-packed card that will serve as the inaugural live sports broadcast on the newly minted network, FOX SPORTS 1.

“We’re finally coming back to Boston and we’re bringing the most stacked card in UFC history,” UFC President Dana White said. “In the main event, former UFC light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua takes on Chael Sonnen, who once again stepped up and asked for a big fight. Then we have Alistair Overeem vs. Travis Browne in a heavyweight fight. Both of those guys have heavy hands, so I expect someone to get knocked out! The rest of the card is loaded with exciting fights, including Urijah Faber vs. Yuri Alcantara, Matt Brown vs. Thiago Alves, Boston’s Joe Lauzon vs. Michael Johnson, Uriah Hall vs. Nick Ring, and Irish superstar Conor McGregor vs. Andy Ogle. In addition, Alistair Overeem (36-12-1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Netherlands) returns to the Octagon to face Travis Browne (14-1-1, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) in a heavyweight showdown that is sure to deliver. Also, former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (28-6, fighting out of Sacramento, Calif.) looks for his third straight win as he meets dynamic Brazilian bantamweight Yuri Alcantara (27-4, Soure Para, Brazil).

A planned UFC on Fox Sports 1: Shogun vs. Sonnen bout between Ultimate Fighter 17 runner-up Uriah Hall and Nick Ring is off. UFC officials on Monday announced that Ring is out of the fight, but added that Hall’s fellow TUF 17 cast mate Josh Samman has already agreed to take his place.

TUF Live fan favorite Andy Ogle has been sidelined by a staph infection, forcing him off the inaugural UFC on FOX Sports 1 event in Boston. Hawaii's Max Holloway will be stepping in to face Irish breakout star Conor McGregor in what could be a tremendously entertaining striker-vs.-striker showcase. Thiago Alves' highly anticipated return to the Octagon will have to wait a little longer. An injury has forced "Pitbull" out of his UFC on FOX Sports 1 - 1 bout with Matt Brown. Stepping in for Alves is Mike Pyle, who's currently riding a four-fight win streak.
